Program Description:
Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) is an intervention model for children aged 0-5 who have experienced at least one traumatic event (e.g. maltreatment, the sudden or traumatic death of someone close, a serious accident, sexual abuse or exposure to domestic violence), who are experiencing mental health, attachment, and/or behavioral problems as a result. The treatment model integrates psychodynamic, attachment, trauma, cognitive behavioral and social-learning theories into a dyadic treatment approach designed to restore the child-parent relationship and the childās mental health/developmental progress that have been impacted by the experience of trauma. Child-parent interactions are the focus of the intervention modalities aimed at restoring a sense of mastery, security and growth, and promoting congruence between bodily sensations, feelings, and thinking on the part of both the child and parent and their relationship with one another. Treatment also focuses on contextual factors that may affect the caregiver-child relationship (e.g. cultural norms, socioeconomic and immigration-related stressors).
