Peter S Loft, Jr., MSW comes to us from the Incredible Years Programs in Seattle, Washington, an internationally known evidenced-based programs for parents, teachers, and young children, proven to reduce long-term risk factors for families and children. He is a certified trainer in the Classroom Dinosaur School Social Skills Program, small group treatment model of Dinosaur School Social Skills intervention for children with at-risk behaviors, Basic and Advanced Parenting Programs, and in Teacher Classroom Management Strategies.

About the Training

This training will cover in depth the group-based BASIC Parenting programs, which are designed to promote positive parenting strategies and assist parents in managing children’s behavior problems. Three Incredible Years® Programs are covered in the BASIC Training: Toddler Parent Program, Preschool Basic Parent Program, and the early portion of School Age Basic Program. Content includes: child-directed play, narrated commenting, social, emotional and persistence coaching, positive and responsive attention and praise, and predictable routines. Group therapy leadership process issues such as empowering parents, collaborating, dealing with resistance, confronting and teaching, experiential practices, and advocating for parents will be discussed. These intervention programs may be used by professionals (i.e., therapists/parent educators from psychology, social work, education, nursing and psychiatry) as treatment programs for families with young children with conduct problems/ADHD, high risk families, teenage parents, and families referred by child welfare for neglect and abuse. The training also illustrates how to use these programs in a prevention setting for use in preschools/elementary schools.

Learning Objectives for Incredible Years Basic Parent Training:

Content:

1. Participants will be able to describe the value of parent-child play for children’s social and emotional development.
2. Participants will be able to define the terms labeled praise and proximal praise.
3. Participants will be able to define and demonstrate the skill of descriptive commenting.
4. Participants will differentiate between four types of coaching: academic, persistence, social, and emotional and will be able to demonstrate each type.
5. Participants will be able to define the term differential attention and explain how parents can use this to shape child behavior.
6. Participants will be able to define the modeling principle as it applies to children’s learning from their parents.
7. Participants will be able to describe how to set up an effective incentive system.
8. Participants will be able to describe the strategy of planned ignoring.
9. Participants will be able to explain the steps to effectively using Time Out to calm down for aggressive and noncompliant behavior.
10. Participants will be understand steps to teach children how to effectively solve problems.

Methods and Processes

1. Participants will be able to describe the Parenting Pyramid to parents in the Incredible Years groups.
2. Participants will be able to conduct a benefits/barriers brainstorm with parenting group participants.
3. Participants will be able to describe the steps to setting up a successful role play to help parents practice new parenting strategies.
4. Participants will be able to use the video vignettes in the Incredible Years program to facilitate discussion and new learning in each content area.
5. Participants will be able to describe the collaborative process and explain why it is an important part of working with parents in the Incredible Years groups.
6. Participants will understand how to use puppets with children and will be able to set up role plays to teach basic puppet skills to parents.
7. Participants will understand strategies for engaging higher-risk families in parenting groups.
8. Participants will be able to define and demonstrate the concept of “the collaborative process.”
